Opaque is the first installment of the Scion Saga series by Calix Leigh-Reign, a novel that masterfully blends elements of science fiction, fantasy, and young adult fiction. The story follows 16-year-old Adam, a troubled teenager grappling with feelings of alienation and a dark mindset. His life takes a dramatic turn when he meets Carly, a new student at his school, with whom he instantly connects. As their relationship deepens, Adam discovers that he possesses extraordinary powers and is connected to an ancient Russian bloodline. This revelation thrusts him into a world of danger, as he becomes a target for the Iksha, a secret organization bent on eradicating his kind.

At its core, Opaque is a tale of self-discovery, identity, and the struggle to accept one's true nature. Through Adam's journey, the novel delves into the complexities of teenage angst, the struggle for acceptance, and the moral dilemmas that come with wielding great power. The narrative is driven by Adam's transformation from a brooding, isolated teen into a young man who must confront his dark past and embrace his newfound identity.

The world-building in Opaque is another highlight. Leigh-Reign creates a rich, immersive setting seamlessly blending supernatural elements with real-world challenges. The mythology surrounding the Scion bloodlines and the lurking threat of Iksha adds layers of intrigue and suspense, keeping readers engaged throughout.

Although Adam’s initial behavior and darker traits could be off-putting to some, they serve a purpose in illustrating his growth.

Opaque is ideally suited for young adult readers who enjoy a mix of fantasy, science fiction, and coming-of-age themes. The book’s exploration of complex emotions, moral choices, and the journey of self-discovery will resonate with teenagers and young adults alike. However, older readers who appreciate well-developed characters and intricate world-building will also find it an engaging read.

I particularly appreciated the transformation of Adam’s character. His growth from a troubled teen into someone who begins to understand and accept his extraordinary abilities is both satisfying and well-executed. The dynamic between Adam and Carly, with their evolving relationship, adds a touch of romance that enriches the story without overshadowing the central plot. The blend of suspense, action, and emotional depth makes Opaque a compelling read.

The book is well-edited with no errors whatsoever. The narrative flows smoothly, and the descriptive language vividly brings the world of the Scion Saga to life.

Overall, Opaque is a captivating start to the Scion Saga series, offering a unique blend of fantasy, science fiction, and emotional depth. It sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting continuation of the series. I would rate Opaque 5 out of 5 stars, as it delivers a compelling story with strong character development and immersive world-building, with just a few minor pacing issues.
