“We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies” by Matthew Tysz is the first book in a fantasy series set in the fictional land of Voulhire.

The novel presents a troubled kingdom where wealth, culture, and technology thrive, yet people grapple with questions of identity. Faith, science, and magic vie for prominence, each offering a promise of a perfect world and an identity to those uncertain of their purpose. Amid rising tensions, an immigrant arrives from a war-torn land, eager to repay the opportunity his new home has given him.

As the characters navigate this complex world, their stories intertwine, revealing hidden depths and personal struggles. The engaging plot skillfully balances intensity with a compelling context for Galen’s arrival as a humble refugee. The book’s opening, reminiscent of the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean,” sets the stage for Galen’s journey. He travels to Voulhire to claim an inheritance from his uncle, embarking on a boat journey that introduces him to the tale of the Emperor of Lullabies. This emperor’s four sons were sent to separate islands to grow and learn to govern, but tensions escalated, leading to civil war among them.

The boat sails to Magnum Caelum, a tiny town in Voulhire, ruled by King Wilhelm. Alongside Galen, other characters like Rowan (a powerful wizard), the kingdom of Voulhire, various cities, and the enigmatic Riva Rohavi play crucial roles. Motivational quotes pepper the narrative, including the memorable “See the good in everything, and the best of it will find you.” Galen’s relatable portrayal allows readers to connect with his emotions and thoughts, making this a must-read for fantasy enthusiasts.

I found the book remarkably delightful; however, I had to use a dictionary for unfamiliar words multiple times, and as a result, I would give it a four-star rating out of five. I would also like to highlight that the editing of the book was excellent.

If you love fantasy, “We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies” awaits your exploration!
