Review of The Legacy of Job's Wife
5 out of 5 stars.
Cynthia Koelker’s “The Legacy of Job’s Wife” is a historical fiction novel that retells the biblical story of the character Job through the eyes of his wife Ix’ises. Born childhood friends and sweethearts, Job and Ix’ises are rewarded with wealth and children, until calamity strikes and cripples them. Thus, while Job continues to serve and worship God, the character of Ix’ises deals with resentment and hopelessness concerning the divine order. In this novel, Koelker writes and interconnects stories that depict themes such as love, faith, and endurance and situates them in the fairly elaborated historical context of Uz. I found it authentic and effective that at the beginning of each chapter, there is a poem evoking the emotional turmoil of the characters, especially Ix’ises. This novel can be considered a new vision of an old theme with realistic elements drawing people’s attention to hardship and hope. The information given in the short story “The Legacy of Job’s Wife” is amazing; therefore, the given work is worth five stars.
In “The Legacy of Job’s Wife”, Koelker shows the historical epoch not as something remote in time, but as the present reality. Through the literal attention to historical and cultural elements that shape the opus, she provides the reader with the strong flesh and Blood of the characters of Uz thus granting their feelings and Passion. Perhaps the novel’s greatest strength and lasting appeal is the discussion of the major issues—how does evil exist in the world and where is goodness; faith seems especially important in the contemporary moment.
The story “The Legacy of Job’s Wife” by Cynthia Koelker is quite intriguing and engrossing; however, some readers may consider the emphasis on religious elements and the exhaustive descriptions of rituals as cumbersome. On the same note, while the inclusion of poetic interludes is visually appealing, it may not be appealing to many people. Nevertheless, none of these features takes away from the novel’s substance; thus, the book rightfully deserves five stars for presenting readers with an inspiring tale of faith, love, and perseverance.
The book's writing style is marvelous and the editing of the book is superb with no errors.
All in all, ‘The Legacy of Job’s Wife’ is an engrossing, deeply moving work of fiction that gives a fresh and haunting twist to an Old Testament narrative. This book is for those who like historical fiction, biblical stories, and stories of a man who has faith and can love despite all the misfortunes. And that is a deep story that leaves an imprint in the soul after the last page has been read.
