This book is a very interesting story that focuses on Leotychides; he was not just any man but an embodiment of the spirit of Sparta. I felt he was a little bit complex in terms of his character display. His life was torn between his duty to Sparta and his personal beliefs. Another symbolic person in his life was his cousin, who symbolizes the temporary nature of power and how even the strongest can be vulnerable.

Their interconnected lives and choices created a picture of leadership, sacrifice, and the impact of individuals on history. Through Leotychides, who was also a descendant of kings, the author explores Sparta's history. The Fox by M. N. J. Butler depicts his rise to power, political struggles, and personal battles, which were key historical events that shaped Sparta. From the harsh training of the agoge to Sparta's eventual downfall, the author combines thorough research with vivid storytelling to bring the city's glory and tragedy to life.

In this book, I learned a lot about the good aspects of Spartan culture through the close friendships and teamwork among the soldiers. Especially Leotychides and his fellow warriors, who became very close, especially during their tough training and battles. It is quite touching to witness these powerful connections forged by common struggles. From the book, I was able to understand the strength of human connection and how people can pull together to help one another even under trying circumstances.

One aspect of the book I have an issue with is that it shows unsettling scenes of harshness and cruelty towards this serf, which made me realize that not everything about Sparta was admirable. Seeing how these practices were accepted as normal back then reminded me of the darker side of their culture. This was an issue for me, and I couldn’t enjoy the book in full.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because of the focus on leadership, camaraderie, and selflessness, but I removed one star because of the brutal treatment meted out to helots and the strict class structure, which serves as a striking reminder of Sparta's darker sides. However, those who enjoy historical plays and are curious about the complicated moral systems of ancient nations should read this book; it is also well-edited and error-free.
