Just Die by E Alan Fleischauer is a fictional novel based in the present-day Midwest. Jake Silver, a recently retired financial advisor, suddenly has a stroke. When he recovers from it, he realizes he has the awesomely terrible new power to immediately end someone’s life by simply pointing at them and saying the words, “Just die.” At first, Jake did this accidentally, not knowing what was happening. He and his fiancé, along with a new friend of theirs, experiment, trying to test Jake’s new abilities. Soon, Jake faces a dilemma: does he keep this new power a secret, or does he use it for the greater good of his country?

I believe this book is most appropriate for adult readers. There is no sexual content in the book, not even insinuated situations, but there is a fair amount of profanity. Also, all the characters are middle-aged adults, making it most relatable to those close to that age range.

Throughout the book, there are several errors, though not so much as to affect my reading flow. Most of the errors involved missing commas. There were also a few sections in the book where the story seemed to be out of order. For example, at one point Jake is speaking with his lawyer about something, and then suddenly the lawyer is only just arriving and hasn’t even seen Jake yet. This happens on multiple occasions, leading to a bit of confusion.

One thing I did not like about the story was how OK everyone seemed to be with Jake’s new murder power. They are just totally blasé about the whole situation, thinking it’s completely normal and that there’s nothing wrong with him going around killing people. This was not a very realistic thought process. The characters had extremely unemotional and underdeveloped personalities.

Another thing I did not particularly enjoy was how the author overly explained minor characters. Characters that were only mentioned a few times and were out of the story halfway through the book had extensive backgrounds and mini storylines branching off that were unnecessary for the development of the book. The author could have used this time to develop the main characters instead of making up side plots.

Finally, the ending was very hurried. The author had mini-sections for each character, trying to wrap up all the diverging storylines quickly and brusquely. There could have been more extensive explanations and development of the plot, both leading up to the end as well as the ending itself. It was just suddenly over with the least amount of explanation possible. Overall, it was very disappointing.

This novel was average. The book had an average story, average writing abilities, and average characters. There was nothing exciting that hooked me and pulled me in. Because of this, along with the author’s curt and abrupt writing style, I am rating this book 3 out of 5.
