William H. Coles’ captivating thriller novel, McDowell, casts the enigmatic Hiram McDowell into the limelight. The book unfolds in two distinct sections, each revealing a different layer of Hiram’s intricate life.

Hiram, an experienced and adept surgeon, spent the majority of his life building a thriving medical career. His relentless ambition led him to cut ties ruthlessly, whether it involved family members or lifelong companions. His relentless drive for career excellence created a trail of bitterness, especially from Michael O’Leary, whom he had pledged to promote within the International College of Surgeons. However, Hiram's indifference wasn't confined to his career; his apathy towards women, his own spouse included, was a stark contrast to the consistent and profound affection he showed towards his progeny. As the story progresses, it confronts the reader with the potential consequences of Hiram's decisions. Is it possible for the past to catch up with him? Is there a chance for him to make amends? These questions are answered in the enthralling narrative of the book.

This literary piece provided me with great pleasure; it was thoroughly engaging and delightful. The book's integration of applicable ethical teachings struck a chord with me. Moreover, the author's manner of writing was remarkable, showcasing considerable expertise and delicacy. The portrayal of characters was exceptional—I could clearly picture each one in my imagination. Also, the unfolding of the storyline kept me constantly intrigued; it was always lively and interesting.

Despite encountering a handful of errors, they didn’t significantly impact my overall enjoyment of the book. I would rate it 4 out of 5 stars due to these minor issues.

I recommend the novel McDowell to readers who appreciate character-centered fiction. However, if you prefer faster-paced development stories, this book may not be the best match for you. Be aware that profanity plays a significant role in the narrative, so it’s not recommended for those who have less tolerance.
