Review of Opaque
When I started reading this book, my first impression was, "Here we go again, another werewolf teen story." Then I kept reading it, and I had an amazing surprise. First, it is not a werewolf story, although it is about teenagers, but in a good way. In addition, it is a very interesting book with unpredictable plot twists and a very catchy storyline. For those reasons, I would like to give "Opaque" by Calix Leigh-Reign a rating of 4 out of 5.
The story starts with Adam, a teenager who doesn't understand his thoughts. His way of thinking is dense, dark, and low-key devilish; just as I would describe the first two or three chapters, they are a clear reflection of Adam's mind. Then we get to know Carly, a beautiful and smart girl who turns the story around. Her relationship with Adam is one of the many things that make this book interesting.
As the story goes, Dauma, Carly's mother, is introduced, and it is impossible not to love this character. Dauma and Carly are both strong and powerful women, capable of the unimaginable. Their bond is incredible; they share a mother-daughter relationship beyond compare; they love and support each other unconditionally. This is the type of woman-to-woman relationship that is enjoyable. In addition, Carly has the best character evolution during the story; I liked reading how she grows and develops till the end of the book.
On the other hand, we get to know Vikki, an annoying teenager who is always around Adam, making him uncomfortable. From my perspective, this character brings dynamism to the story; she is superficial and shallow, so her personality brings a lot of contrast to Carly.
I would like to mention the bond between Adam and his mother, Jo Anne. They start with a weird relationship that evolves with love and support. Jo Anne is a caring and kind woman who, even though she can be pictured as just warm and lovely, is a brave person who stands up for his son, supporting him through all the facts and issues that he needs to overcome.
Finally, the main reason I would recommend this book is the multiple unpredictable twists and turns that it contains; it makes you stay with your eyes glued to the pager. I did not guess how the story would develop, and it was a surprise for me—the mix of action, love, fantasy, and a bit of chaos.
If I have to change something about the book, it needs to be the resemblance I found between the characters Bella and Edward from "Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer and the main characters Carly and Adam, overall in the first chapters, although this book is not about vampires.
