Searching for Paradise is a historical fiction novel set in the 1980’s when the youth are trying to live the American dream. Born in Salem Massachusetts, T.L. Hughes takes his readers back to the days when life is simple with his debut novel.

Mike, Lucas and Declan, were three friends who are set to follow their dreams. Without any second thought, all three of them quit their jobs and decided to travel across America and then fly to London to fulfill their dream to be in film-making and video production. Looking at the distant future ahead of them, the three went out on the road using an old Ford Fairlane with a surfboard on top. During their journey, the three visited old acquaintances, reminisced with the good old times and slowly began to doubt if their decision was right. Travelling across the country reminded the three of the life they once have in college, the good part and the bad ones.

This book was an easy read. The words used were simple that everyone can understand it. What I liked the most was the fact that it was in the eighties. T’L’ Hughes was able to take me to that time when people used to live the American dream through this novel. Instead of just reading, it felt like I’m alongside Mike, Lucas, and Declan, going through the roads of America and visiting family and friends before setting out on another journey. The book was fun to read that when I started, I haven’t realized that I have already gone through several chapters of it.

I enjoy going through the pages of this novel, but if there is something that I don’t like is the lack of a huge event or something that might almost stop them in their journey. This novel is like a biography or a diary, writing anything that happened that particular day. The circumstances and events are quite enjoyable to read, but I still keep looking for that something, an event that I will always remember when I hear the title of this book.

Despite the lack of a climax, I would still recommend it to others. The events that happened to the three, their journey to the unknown future, and their resolve to pursue their dreams would be an inspiration especially to the present generation of young people. To those who lived in the eighties, this book will bring them nostalgia. Thus I will rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because it doesn't have an event that I will always remember. Another thing, a sentence got repeated on page 142, “In 1984, it was liberating to be able to walk out of the Chicago music store of our own free will.” Overall this book was good and entertaining.
