I just finished reading Deceit by Vernon Baumrind. It was a hard read simply because of what he went through. It was disturbing to me all the information that came to light after the trials. The man who was supposed to be a doctor was a complete disgrace. He was the type of man who enforced my reasoning to refuse to have a male gynecologist.
I feel bad that Vernon had to endure so much, but I am so proud of him for loving his children so fiercely. He wanted their happiness, success, and mental health to be top priorities, and he succeeded. I am glad the children had a happy ending as well and seemed to be living their best life thanks to their dad, who stopped at nothing to make sure they had a safe and stable environment.
At first, I couldn’t stand the book because it just seemed like he was shaming a woman for going out for what she wanted—making her a monster, whore, whatever—but after reading it more, she was probably just as sick as the monster manipulator. She was a liar and manipulative toward her husband and children.
The fact that she picked a man over her children is wild. The fact that she picked a sicko over her children and an actual loving husband is insane. It seems to me that from the beginning of Linda and Vernon’s relationship, she was just settling until something else came along.
The language with which Ewing spoke to Linda was just outright gross. Yes, there is a time and a place for talking like that, but just the words used made me want to gag. I am not a prude at all, but yuck. I can’t believe how she would be grossed out at first and then totally get into it and be ok with it just to "please him." He really had her brainwashed in the end! I would rate this book at 2–3. There was a lot of information, and some of the information made it hard to distinguish between the conversations and the dialog from Vernon. It kind of all ran together. But I would recommend it.
