Review of To Master the Tides
Imagine finding the one person who makes you happy but being unable to be with them; that was Frederick’s experience. To Master the Tides by Josephine Borgia is a book about a melancholic young man named Frederick Estibus who has always had his life choices dictated for him by his brother, Cuthbert, and his father, Lord Estibus, without putting up an argument. One would think his brother Cuthbert had his best interest in mind when he picked Isabella to marry Frederick, but no, Cuthbert was after his interest, being that he took a liking to Isabella. Unable to find love, happiness, or children in his arranged marriage, Frederick, with a pistol in hand, decided to do the unspeakable but instead found a new purpose to live, all because of beautiful Ellie and her baby.
Josephine Borgia outdid herself in this book because not only was this book enchanting, but she gave us that “slow pace burn” that had you itching to know what happened next!! The author’s insightful and straightforward writing style drew me in, as she was able to properly portray each character’s emotions, from jealousy to melancholy to happiness and lots more. Believe me when I say I was going through those emotions as though they were real.
My favourite moments? It has to be whenever Frederick was with Ellie, the woman who indirectly saved his life and the love of his life. Despite not being able to have their happily ever after, the moments they spent together were blissful. Ellie was a warm and kindhearted woman who never judged Frederick, despite his flaws and shortcomings. She was always so open and thoughtful in everything she did. Despite all Frederick did to stay with Ellie, it never worked because truth be told, we don’t always get what we want, and it’s just the way life goes.
My dislikes? Hmmm, well, I have nothing to dislike about this book. It was well-written, and it has to be one of the best books I’ve read. It was captivating, compelling, and enjoyable, and let’s not forget about the sense of humour scattered like tiny treasures around the book. It was a good read!! Its sense of historical romance and tragedy appealed to me. Although I must warn that there were some profanities used, I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical romance with a touch of tragedy.
I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars because of the well-developed characters, and the exploration of themes such as love, purpose, and the unexpected twists of fate suggests a story that resonates deeply with readers. My connection to the characters and their journey underscores the book's quality and its ability to evoke a range of emotions. This piece left a profound impression on me, making it a standout read. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free.
