Strong Heart is a story about a little girl named Sarah who is brought to spend the summer holidays with her grandfather who she’s never met. Together with other characters in the story they embark on an important trip; over there Sarah has a fantastical adventure and ends up teaching all the adults around her more about their identity, culture and legend.

Strong Heart was written by Charlie Sheldon, an author with extensive travelling experience and lots of knowledge in dealing and interacting with Tribal people. His story includes many details about the home, legends, culture and way of life of the indigenous people of Olympic Mountains and the Pacific coast and he effectively uses the protagonist, Sarah to teach readers about how beautiful and authentic that culture was/is. More importantly, his book Strong Heart gives us an alternative view on the origins of humans which is entirely different from what we know now but equally plausible.

I give this story a 3 out of 4 because of its absorbing nature, it alternates constantly between the past and the present and before long you lose yourself in a beautiful world with beautiful people whose experiences you joyfully share. You go through pain, anger and even helplessness with the characters. To me, in a society where many people strive to behave in a conformed way, it’s nice to see the main character of Strong Heart with many flaws but accepted and loved for who she is, the author does a good job of making her a stubborn but loveable character who is without pretense but who becomes for lack of a better word a ‘better’ person because she learns more about her identity.

I did not give Strong Heart 4 out of 4 because Sheldon did not start his story too well, the first four or five chapters contained too many history lessons that it became a bit difficult to know if I was reading a history book or a story, also in the first chapter alone one character William was called Walleye and Eye; it was a bit confusing and for a while I thought they were three different people. The story really picked up after Sarah’s adventure and I felt that could hinder people who did not have patience to continue reading to discover that it’s a really great story. Furthermore, it had a few grammatical errors even though they were not serious enough to detract from the beauty of the story. Finally, it ended a bit abruptly and left me with many questions. I was curious about the budding relationship between Myra and Sergei, I wanted to know if the Buckhorn corporation would succeed or not and I definitely wanted to see Sarah’s step grandfather, Fletcher Lynch, punished for trying “to pull a mitch” on her.

I learnt from Strong Heart, about a people whose legends are the fabric of the modern world and whose stories should never be made to die. Strong Heart has really made me begin to think about how the Tribal people lived and continue to live, I would certainly love to read more about them.
