I love reading books that are different from what I usually read. It appears to me as a challenge and also as an opportunity to maybe try something new and see whether I enjoy it or not. These were my exact thoughts when I chose to read the book Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reign. I must say, I fairly enjoyed reading this book and did not expect to like it so much. So let’s talk about the book and my thoughts on it now!

To begin with, this book is a spellbinding journey into a world where we can see how extraordinary abilities intertwine with the complexities of teenage life. It is a fascinating tale that follows the adventures of Adam and Carly as they unravel the mysteries of their supernatural powers, inherited from ancient Russian bloodlines.

The character sketch of Adam is spot on. His transformation from a troubled, anguished teen to a seeker of redemption forms the heart of the narrative. At first, when I started reading the book, I was taken aback by the darkness of Adam’s mind. His thoughts, his rage, his actions, and what he did to Terry petrified me. However, I was intrigued as well by what would happen next. I’m glad I continued reading the book because it was worth it.

Carly, on the other hand, serves as a refreshing contrast to Adam's darkness; her growth and resilience make her a compelling counterpart.

I liked the brisk pace of the book and the unexpected twists, as they kept the plot interesting and immersed me in a vibrant universe of the “Scions.” Moreover, the action sequences are also well-crafted, contributing to the book's overall fast-paced nature. The major themes that the book tackles are identity, family, and romance, which I believe further enrich the story and add emotional depth to the characters' struggles.

I honestly have nothing to dislike about the book. The editing of the book is also exceptional, as I did not find a single error throughout the book. Thus, considering the unique story, the character development, the exploration of different themes, a captivating plot, and a seamless reading experience, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

In conclusion, I’d say that Opaque, which is the first part of the “Scion Saga,” serves as a promising introduction to the series, leaving readers eager to discover what adventures lay ahead. With its intriguing premise, swift plot, and well-rounded characters, this book offers a compelling glimpse into a world where the extraordinary meets the ordinary, making it a must-read for fans of “YA fantasy fiction.”
