The book had the classic premise of a hero's journey, where the protagonist is highly sought after by both the good guys and the bad guys. Each wants to use the hero's power to benefit them in an ongoing war. The book was not very long, meaning I could enjoy it as a fun and quick read. The story itself was very interesting and unique. I have not read or seen anything similar to it before. While the book was classified as science fiction, I did not see why that classification would be used. It seemed to be primarily a fiction work, but there were some scientific elements incorporated into the story. However, the science used was merged with magic, so I would consider magic to be the primary advancement instead of something more futuristic or alien. The character suddenly develops powers that would best be described as fully unlocking the brain's potential. The reason I say this is that it reminds me of movies where a character becomes more and more powerful the more they unlock their full power of the brain. This, to me, was a very cool spin where, instead of being pure chance, they are chosen by some higher entity. Once chosen, they have the free will to decide what side to support, with no apparent limitations to their powers. I also liked how the “powers” were explained in the book. It had that sense that anything could happen while somehow still keeping it as realistic as magic can reasonably get. The reason the book does not get a perfect score is because there was an error, which was using the wrong character's name while referring to another character. There were also some setting issues, where characters were said to be in a certain place and, after some dialogue, were in an entirely different area with no mention of how they got there. Overall, the book was well written. The beginning was slow, but in the sense of it being the world-building and a slow burn to the latter, more action-filled second half. I would recommend the book to someone who is looking for a nice read that really grabs your attention in the second half, but is willing to go through a very slow first half. I am excited to see where the story goes from here and cannot wait for the next book to be released, so I can see the author tie up loose ends and further develop this world he has built.
