Review for Who Told You That You Were Naked? By William E. Combs
By Aimee Wahl
This reexamination of the Garden of Eden brings together a vivid imagery and perspective on how Adam spent his time in the Garden of Eden. It is a fictional story with elements from the Bible that can educate while entertaining the reader. William E. Combs clearly and concisely explains his thoughts on what to take from this classic story of the fall of man.
I was immediately drawn into this book with a descriptive introduction that told about a childhood experience in Alaska that acted as a metaphor for his perspective on directing the beam of his spiritual light.
The way that Who Told You That You Were Naked? was laid out was interesting too, sections told the story from Adam and Eve’s viewpoint while other sections allowed William E. Combs to explain the meaning behind various passages, informing about how the story ties into the Word of God.
Although the way that William E. Combs has his characters speak is a little jagged, I think the intention was to create a character from that point in history whereas he could have taken a more modern language approach and had a smoother conversational tone.
I liked how in depth he got with explaining each part of the story. I was familiar with the story of Adam and Eve before reading this and found it refreshing to see the story unfold from someone else’s viewpoint. I think that this book could be an excellent source for someone who is not familiar with the Bible story.
I really liked how William E. Combs took the parts that he found most important and put them into gray sections, it really helped to see what his thoughts were as he told the story. I also liked how he incorporated study questions in too, that really helps the reader to get an interactive option that helps boost critical thinking while making the book a nice option for group study. Another favorite part of this book was his incorporation of stories and testimonies that helped to wrap his ideas into a modern day example of how God works in our lives.
I think that this story was well-written and was easy to follow along with. It caused me to really think about my own relationship to God and led me to think about what I would have done in similar situations as these people from history went through. I would definitely recommend using this book as a study guide or for an in depth explanation of the beginning of the Bible.
I would rate Who Told You That You Were Naked? By William E. Combs a 3 out of 4 stars, as it was well-written and kept me interested all the way through. I think this book is ideal for an audience who wants to see an in depth perspective on the fall of man.
