THE REVEREND PSYCHOPATH is a book authored by Dr Andrew Rynn . It is tell of true events that transpired in a certain orphanage during the late 1800s, in county kildare, a town west of Ireland's capital, Dublin.
This is a story about the despicable and inhumane treatment of vulnerable children who did not have someone to properly take care of them, children who unfortunately found themselves in the hands of the most cruel people with little to no compassion and empathy for them.
It is a story of how one man managed to immerse wealth at the expense of children, squandering money from people's pockets for his own selfish gain, all in the name of helping vulnerable children, it reveals the evil and selfish nature of Us humans towards those we perceive to be vulnerable in society and how vindictive and cruel people can be at times. By considering court cases cited in this book, I started to imagine just how these children suffered at the mercy of the Reverend.
According to the writer, the tragic events of ill treatment of children took place in an orphanage which was then called Caragh orphanage. An orphanage which had a poorly maintained infrastructure with an environment not conducive for the stay and upkeep of children.
In this orphanage children were subjected to the waste form of punishment that was rather hash. According to One case, (which is cited in this book by the writer) children were made to carry logs tied to their ankles with chains as punishment for trying to run away from the orphanage and in another case of manslaughter against the Reverend, a child died from a cold after being made to bath very cold water and sleeping on a cold floor at night as punishment for wetting the bed. These and many other cases cited in the book shows just how crual this man was towards these young children
According to the writer, the man behind all this was a Catholic Reverend by the name of Samuel George Cotton who was born in 1823 and died in 1900, a few years after his second released from prison . A man who according to the writer died as a rich man
This book is reader friendly and also in support of his arguments the writers added court cases, letters and also death certificates which to me made it more interesting to read and follow through from the beginning to the end
I will conclude by give this book a three out of four rating
