Review of Twisted Threads
The book, Twisted Threads, by Kaylin McFarren is a mystery novel that takes place on a cruise ship traveling through the Caribbean islands. Several different people have been invited to set sail on the cruise ship vacation for free as an attempt to lure them into a sense of safety. The main character, Akira, is a highly trained Japanese assassin who is sent to the cruise ship to find and kill the person who killed her boss’s sister. Her boss is convinced that it is someone from the Lyons family. Sara Lyons is the rude wife who is constantly trying to get other people she does not like into some sort of trouble. Paul, Sara’s husband, caters to her every need and always wants to please her. Sara’s psychotherapist, Peter Bradshaw, travels everywhere she does and goes on the cruise with them. Paul’s nephew, Devon, is also along for the free vacation. Akira sets out to befriend Devon in an attempt to get close to the rest of the family and figure out who the murderer is. During the cruise, there are also other murders that take place, but these murders are not reported and are grossly overlooked in the book.
Overall, I thought the plotline was interesting. I liked the characters, and I am a fan of murder mystery books. I also liked how the book had lots of plot twists that kept me guessing the whole time I read the book. I liked that you had to guess who the killer was, and that it was not revealed until the end of the book.
There were some things that I did not like about the book. I thought the beginning of the book was kind of slow with how Akira tries to seduce and befriend Devon to get information from him. The examples of seduction seemed the same each time the author wrote about them. I was wanting more to happen, but I felt like it took way too long for the story to advance due to the erotic scenes within the book. Additionally, I felt that the erotic scenes were unnecessary to the overall storyline.
I would rate this book two out of five stars for the reasons I stated above. I did not find any grammatical errors or typos in the book. This is a testament to the exceptional editing completed to the book.
I would recommend this book to mature readers because of the explicit sexual content used in the book. There is also profanity within the book as well as instances of murder.
