East Wind by Jack Winnick is the first in a series of Lara and Uri adventures. As a member of Kidon, a secret group within the Special Operations arm of Mossad, Uri is skilled in capture and assassination. His deadly knowledge of the Hezbollah terrorist group brings him to the United States to contend with insurgents thought to have infiltrated the country. Uri is paired with FBI Special Agent Lara Edmond, who is in charge of primary electronic terrorism traffic. As the duo get to know each other and embark on critical adventures, the United States endures a nuclear attack. This attack is immediately followed by the threat of a second, deadlier attack. Their budding relationship is paused while they fight against the clock to save hundreds of thousands of lives and ensure that the country does not bend to the threat of terrorists.
The interconnectedness of governmental agencies is confusing and convoluted, but Winnick describes it with fluidity. He also craftily breaks down the dynamics in the Middle East in such a way that the average reader can begin to understand the years of perplexing war. Through his characters, Winnick offers a unique insight into the twisted logic of terrorists and how their anger and hate toward Western culture are skillfully crafted and indoctrinated in every movement. Winnick has also mastered the craft of descriptive scene setting so that the reader is pulled into the story.
I rate East Wind 4 out of 5 stars. The editing was well done, with no flaws identified. It is an easy read and a thriller that transfixes the reader. At times, the overabundance of detail slowed the plot down but had little effect on the overall story. The characters were so well-developed that I am eager to read the sequel and see where their adventures lead. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast-paced and gripping read.
