Review of A Dream For Peace
Born during an era when Algeria was still under the dominion of France, the author's early life unfolded in a small Algerian town within a family that valued discipline and placed a profound value on education. Raised in a polygamous household, he stood as the sole surviving son of his mother, who held him in deep affection. Despite the loss of his father, she spared no effort to ensure his educational journey thrived. A scholarship opportunity beckoned, leading him to France to pursue a medical education. It was there that he underwent a transformative experience, facing and vehemently opposing racism and discrimination. His journey culminated in not only obtaining a medical degree but also rising to the esteemed position of a professor.
I admire how Dr. Ghoulem acknowledges the influence of his mother, evident in the book's dedication, and highlights the support of his wife, dedicating an entire chapter to her. The recounting of his mother's passing evoked a sense of sadness, yet it is evident that she would take pride in his accomplishments. Another aspect I found appealing in the book is the author's incorporation of French into his memoir. Hailing from a French-speaking nation, he seamlessly integrates French expressions into the English narrative, showcasing his genuine connection to his heritage and his pride in it.
The author's writing style, though intricate, attests to the depth of education and life experience he possesses. I find it admirable that he actively participated in the Moroccan Liberation Army, embodying a profound sense of courage. Additionally, Dr. Berrah's reference to President Houphouet-Boigny as a father resonated with me, underscoring the closeness of their relationships.
However, I didn't like the fact that the author has to document his memoir in a voluminous manner. It could easily bore some readers. This won't affect the rating, though.
I would give "A Dream for Peace" by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The book has two errors, though, which shows it was professionally edited. I would recommend this book to readers who appreciate intricate writing styles and are interested in exploring the life experiences of individuals shaped by significant historical events. If you have an interest in narratives that intertwine complex personal stories with elements of courage and political engagement, this book could be a compelling choice for you.
