Review of Love Is
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. (1 Corinthians 13:4-8a NIV) Church people and non-church people alike are familiar with this passage of scripture. These verses define what love is. They are often quoted and talked about at weddings, where the bride and groom are encouraged to love each other in the way these verses define love. It is said that if they do so, they will live happily ever after. If we understood and lived love, our lives and the lives of those we interact with would change.
In Love Is, Kim Sorrelle invites the reader to slow down and consider what these verses say about what love is and what it is not. She takes readers with her on her year-long journey to learn and live what love is. Sorrelle spent most of the year in Haiti working for Rays of Hope International, a non-profit she started with her dad. In Love Is, she shares stories of mixed-up shipping containers, being chased by a motorcycle gang, sleeping on the ground where creepy crawlies roam, getting lost on a mountain in the dark, and much more. All of her adventures led Sorrelle to life-changing discoveries about love.
I have read the 1 Corinthians 13 passage many times and thought I understood love. But as I began to read Love Is, I discovered in the first chapter that I really don't understand love. For example, I calmly repeat myself for the fifth or sixth time instead of yelling at the person on the other end of the phone. In that case, I am demonstrating patient love, right? No. Patient love is being present in the moment and understanding that people are more important than my agenda. That realization hit me hard. I immediately thought about all the times I "multi-task" instead of truly being present and listening to the people talking to me.
The only negative about this book was the number of errors the editors and proofreaders left behind. I suggest that more careful attention is paid to editing and proofreading future editions.
Love Is will change the reader's thoughts about love. I encourage everyone to read this book. You don't have to be a church person to enjoy and learn from it. Due to the editing issues, I give Love Is 4 out of 5 stars.
