This book covers a lot of graphic and mature content for readers. It also has multiple points of view so it’s interesting to see what others are thinking. I would give this book a 2 out of 5 as this is not the genre I am used to reading. It talks a lot about gangs, drug, violence, sexual assault and a little bit of religious topics. It's a heavy subject and it can be very descriptive. It was hard to get lost in books and have an immersive feeling I enjoy while reading. Also it was hard to understand some context and to follow along. Maybe because of the amount of POV, it jumps from one person to the next and it’s hard to follow the story. You don’t have a good connection with the characters and I think that’s the most important point of reading. Also another point deducted from this rating is the amount of profanity in this book. I know it’s supposed to be that way but I don’t enjoy it. Especially when race comes into it I just can’t read novels like that. I’m also not a fan of how the children were being exposed to these violent nature, it makes me upset to read this. I would have not added multiple POV for readers as I mentioned it can be difficult to follow. I would keep it a max of 4 POV. The amount of profanity could also be lowered as reading profanity can be a lot. But again I understand why they have to do that for the genre, but that’s what is affecting my rating. I know descriptive writing is a must for novels but gruesome novels can cause a lot of pressure to a reader. When I read some parts of the book I didn’t need a gruesome description. That wanted me to put the book down and not finishing it. Another issue I had was the writing portion of it. When the characters are speaking there were parts where the quotation marks were not included. I assumed those were thoughts of the character not the dialect. It got confusing when the other characters responded to them. I tend to go back and read it again to make sure I was following it correctly. This was just minor issues but something the author could take notes on. Overall I still think it can be a good book to certain audience, but unfortunately I would have to give this a 2 out 5 rating.
