As a seminary graduate, I feel uniquely qualified to rate this book a three out of five. The average rating is not due to it being bad or deficient in its teaching, but because it is not necessarily unique as a daily devotional. Unfortunately, you are likely to find many similar inspirational Christian daily devotional books on the shelves (cf. Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life). It is broken down into 21 short, easily digestible chapters and written in a conversational tone that makes for a fun and easy read. Despite the fact that it is meant to be a quick read, it could actually benefit from being a longer/fuller autobiography. On the other hand, perhaps because it is meant to be a quick read, it is extremely well written and edited, with no grammatical errors noted.

I appreciated Outlaw’s personal anecdotes and examples. In fact, I wanted to hear more about them, which is why I feel this book was likely better served as an autobiography. I also appreciate the book for its interactive qualities. He asks good questions and leaves space for you to use the book as a journal and work out your answers and other responses to the text. All in all, I think the Scripture reading, personal anecdotes, questions, and applications lend well to it being a healthy and productive exercised for those seeking intimacy with God.

As a Christian, myself, I find there is a thin line between encouraging others and trying to sell a “quick fix,” and I unfortunately feel that Outlaw sometimes blurs that line. I’m happy for him that he has had the personal experiences that he has with God, but God does not communicate with all in the same way, no matter how ardently we encourage them that it is possible. So I am wary of people reading this, expecting the same kinds of encounters in their own lives that Outlaw has experienced.
