I was unsure what I was getting into when starting Purpose: Design a Community and Change Your Life by Gina Bianchini. Upon reading the summary I thought it was like a written form of a motivational speech and indeed it does sort of read that way. I am glad I dove in though because this book opened my mind to the thought of changing my own life. I have been toying with this thought for a little while and I suppose that is what made me take a glance at this title in the first place.

At the beginning of the book, I was still a little hesitant. Gina seemed to condemn social networking while talking about how great social networking is but further on, I came to realize social networking can mean a much broader scope of connecting and this was what she was trying to differentiate. Using social networking to connect and build something together as opposed to mindless scrolling. Stay engaged instead of isolating yourself with only what is being “fed” to you. There is more to social media than getting likes; the idea that you could be apart of something to help others and even help yourself was an intriguing one.

There are parts of the book that feel “pluggy” and a bit like a sales pitch; “change your life, just write it down, it’s that easy!” I am sure, to a point, the book is kind of a sales pitch for her company. But, as you read on, Gina outlines what she means in detail which was enlightening. I really liked the idea of ‘Purpose 30’ and intend to implement it in my life and see how it goes.

I give this book a 3/5; I liked the concept and found it motivating but, in the end, it feels like a sales pitch.
