"Unlight" by Chandra Shekhar delivers a compelling journey into a post-apocalyptic setting where survival and relationships are at the forefront. In this world, Earth is shrouded by a barrier that obstructs sunlight, transforming the planet into a freezing wasteland. Amidst this bleak backdrop, a group of five survivors finds solace in "The Shell", a brilliantly conceived shelter by the character, Larry Brandon. However, the story isn't merely about battling the elements; it delves into the resilience of the human spirit.

Shekhar intricately crafts a team, each with unique skills: Nicole with medical knowledge, Anna's grasp on ecology, Jessica's tech-savviness, Elizabeth's emotional foundation, and Larry's expertise on The Shell. The growth of characters, particularly Jessica and her evolving bond with sister Anna, stands out. Their dynamic is genuine, reflective of Shekhar's deep understanding of human connections.

The fusion of scientific elements, suspense, character arcs, and occasional humor makes for an engaging read. Detailed portrayals of The Shell and its state-of-the-art technologies underscore Shekhar's dedication to world-building. The inclusion of personal journal entries offers readers a direct gateway into the characters' minds, enhancing immersion.

However, the novel has its shortcomings. The fast-paced narrative, although captivating, left some aspects feeling rushed, with deeper interpersonal conflicts desired for a more authentic ambiance inside The Shell. Additionally, the depiction of certain relationships, especially familial ones, seemed a tad unconventional, slightly deviating from expectations.

One of the standout features of this book is its impeccable editing. It was a delight to traverse the narrative without encountering any typos or grammatical errors—a testament to the sheer quality of the work put into the book.

Conclusively, "Unlight" is rated 4 out of 5 stars. A treat for aficionados of science fiction and fantasy, especially those fascinated by post-apocalyptic settings and intricate character dynamics. While some elements might be intense for younger readers, those 16 and older will find the tale both gripping and insightful.
