Review of Odyssey of High Hopes
In his exquisite memoir, "Odyssey of High Hopes", Cyrus A. Ansary draws from his memories, old records, real life experiences, teachers and total strangers. He is an American Lawyer and Philanthropist.
Be ready to embark on a compelling, heart warming journey with the author as he writes dexterously, weaving his life's journey , sharing his family's failures and successes.
The sub-title, "An Immigrant's Tale of Sacrifice", Courage and Love", resonates the heartbeat of the writer, as he unpretentiously reveals his 'truth'. His journey spans his childhood years in Tehran with his family and his desired destination, America.
The author reveals that his father, "showed no inclination to lift the veil on his upbringing...". His father was orphaned when he was 6 years old.. He lived with an abusive brother who sadistically beat him. He ran away from home when he was 9. His father had to survive without family and friends in an inhospitable area, the Persian Gulf region of Iran in the early 20th century. These memories were too painful to relate to the family.
The writer was proud to claim that "his father looked like a man tested by life and emerged unscathed'. He learnt to read and write Persian his native tongue during his journey. He also became fluent in Hindi, Urdu
and Arabic. His determination was relentless. He walked hundreds of miles traversing many countries.
By 1921 he entered Basra, a city in Iran. Here he landed a job as telegraph operator. During this time he searched and found the woman he wished to marry in Shiraz, 250 miles from his work place. He was 27 and she was 18 when they married. His father loved poetry and Shiraz had a rich history or oral poetry.
Ansary holds dear to his heart, his fathers words, "suffering ennobles". This is reflected in his father's life as he humbly traverses amongst the poor and the elite. You will be bewildered by his father's experiences. The manner in which it is presented is monumental. Endless narratives of his families experiences span the pages of the novel. Waiting to be discovered by discerning readers.
Ansary's father spread the "gospel of entrepreneurship", amongst his children. They moved to Tehran for educational convenience. At first Tehran was a "bewildering city", the family however adapts. His father's dream, for his children to excel and become business orientated, is phenomenal. This is evident in Ansary's initial lessons in English to the many degrees he acquires; his business deals and highly influential acquaintances; he was nothing less than eminent. The author's philanthropic nature, and an unusual sensitivity towards the plight of women make him unique. His achievement in life is mind blowing, and only achievable due to his tenacity and his belief in his father's dream.
Like his father, the author "triumphs in adversity". He shows his gratitude to America when he proudly says,
"For me America is the hope for the world". An exemplary work of art.
Anyone who can read should cherish this masterpiece. Rating 5/5.
