Kalalya by Jeannine Nicholas is a fiction depicting the life of three generations of women who become intertwined and have to come together to find the healing they need. The first character is Lena, a wealthy, widowed Italian old lady constantly seen in black clothes. She lost her twins in a war and blames herself for the loss. She owns many properties, including the building where Kalalya and her mother reside, and this is how she meets Kalalya.

Kalalya is an 11-year-old rude and sassy child whose father died when she was a little girl. This trauma affects Kalalya's upbringing and lifestyle. Maureen is a young Irish lady whose family disowned her because of her marriage to an African-American man. When Jamal dies in a car crash, life turns sour, leaving the poor widow and their daughter to harsh realities. Gradually but not easily, the three characters build a friendship that later turns into an unbreakable bond, with each character struggling to find redemption. Will they succeed? Read more to find out.

The author, Jeannine Nicholas, did a plausible job bringing together three characters from different backgrounds with all their pains, faults, and struggles. Maureen's interracial marriage, the fallout with her family, the loss of her husband, the plight of being a single mother, and the effects are some of the issues discussed in the book. I love Lena's strength, courage, and persistence in bringing out the best in Kalalya. Another thing I love about the book is that the author describes each character from three different narratives, adding colour and liveliness. The book is realistic in touching on significant issues that surround interracial marriages, domestic violence, child neglect, racism, and the effect it has.

I disliked nothing about the book; it satisfied my curiosity and had me spellbound throughout. I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars and 5 out of 5 stars as it had amazing, flawless and perfect editing. The book was also professionally edited.

I recommend this book to people from broken homes who are in search of hope and to people who love to read great fiction books. However, the book contains some sexual content; therefore, I do not recommend this book to young people.
