Reconfigurement: Reconfiguring your life at any stage and planning ahead by author E. Alan Fleisehauer is a terrific book about rethinking retirement. The author, who normally write fiction books, was moved to write this book about retirement in light of the pandemic and the importance of rethinking or reconfiguring for retirement. Fleisehauer proposes that we plan to work longer since most of us will live longer into retirement years. He starts out by asking what is your plan for retirement? Most do not have a plan until they get closer to retirement age. He contrasts what has been a traditional approach to retirement with reality. The chapters move from the plan through each step of life decisions up to wills and trusts.
Since he encourages the reader to consider working longer, this will more than likely involve a second career. He poses the questions of what would you love to do? What are you really good at? As you think about the possibility, the need, to continue working after leaving your current position, what did you always want to do?
This was a great reminder to those of us who need to be thinking about getting older and heading toward retirement age, but also the advantage and importance of thinking about this at a much younger age. Twelve chapters covering every thing from savings, personal disability insurance, careers assessments, useful tools on the web, life insurance, social security, investments, health insurance, long-term care and wills and trusts gives the reader a wide range of topics to consider.
I give this book a 5 out of 5 rating as it offers concrete advice about retirement and all that comes with it in an easy to read manner with plenty of illustrations to keep the reader’s attention. As we rejoice in the fact that most of us will live longer, we must also prepare financially for that life. Reconfigurement provides a manual to help in that process.
