Purpose, a book written to affirm the possibility of envisaging and achieving desired change(s) and improvement in one's personal or community life drew heavily on the profound experience of the author, Gina Bianchini, who is the founder, and CEO of Mighty Networks The book is presented in three parts.
Part I lays the foundation of what a real community is through the author's narration of her experiences with her core and extended family and her larger community in a closely knit bustling village setting while growing up. She went on to assert that an individual's purpose in life is not necessarily a singular endeavor but multiple purposes which change or expand as the season of life might dictate. The main thrust of this Part is that an individual's purpose is best achieved faster and with better results within the context and with inputs from members of his or her communities, physical or digital, with resultant mutual benefits. She illustrated this with how the Computer Magic started with a few friends coming together in car garages started tinkling with the idea of building personal computers brought changes which are still ongoing to the entire world: Birthing of Apple inc., Facebook and LinkedIn in view.
Drawing on how she found her purpose, the author gave practical guides on how the readers can find their purposes, craft their Future Stories and continue to evaluate the progress made towards achieving these stories through a daily or regular exercise tagged Purpose 30 Practice. Hints on how to maximize one's talent, time, energy and focus, in the face of prevailing toxic social media environment were also incorporated into this Part. The author consistently asserts that real community is "where connections are made, relationships are built, quests are undertaken, challenges are overcome, opportunities are seized, and people are transformed". She also affirms that the power of real community will produce desired results faster and better than solo efforts.
Parts II and III are essentially step by step accounts of how to successfully plan, design, build, sustain, and continue to grow a digital community with ample illustrations from examples the author was personally involved in or aware of.
In summary, the book acknowledges the hitherto unimaginable change brought into the global space within a short period of time by the dot.com boom and the prevailing toxic environment of today's social media. It, however. affirms that great changes at individual, community and even global levels are still possible if individuals and communities can take time out to think through what changes they desire and follow the guidelines laid down in this short but amazing book to create a vibrant and enduring community, whether physical or digital.
Considering that this is a first attempt at book writing, according to the author, Purpose is remarkably flawless. I could identify two Typos only and would rate the book a 5 out of 5.
