Kakayla by Jeannie Nicholas is a story about an eleven-year-old, ill-mannered girl called Kalayla. Her mother, Maureen, is a white woman, while her father, Jamal, is a black man. Maureen married Jamal against her parents' wishes, which resulted in her being abandoned by them. After some years of marriage, Maureen lost her husband in a car accident. This incident left her with no choice but to face the reality of raising her daughter alone. She moved into a new apartment owned by Lena Barzetti, a 70-year-old widow. Lena took notice of Kalayla and was worried about her loneliness, disrespectfulness, and aimlessness.

After so much effort, Lena soon finds out the truth about the girl's problem. She then began taking some steps to get her engaged in some meaningful activities. Lena, having formally suffered a similar fate in her family as a mother, felt a need for her to assist Maureen in bringing Kalayla up well. However, all their efforts proved futile, as Kalayla seemed not to be interested in any meaningful exercise. Will Lena give up and abandon her to her fate, or will Kalayla turn a new leaf? Read this book to find out.

This book has impressed me in so many ways. The writer's presentation of some sensitive relationships and family problems, as well as child upbringing, was wonderful and beneficial. One of the characters I enjoyed the most in the book was Lena Barzetti. I liked the fact that she was compassionate. Having been through a lot of ugly marital and parental experiences, she felt a need to be a guiding light for Kalayla's mother. I believe readers will learn from and benefit from this.

Another character I liked in the story was Maureen. After losing her husband and having no emotional or financial support from her in-laws and her parents, she summoned the courage to rise to her feet and accept the full responsibility of caring for her daughter. Apart from that, the book also taught me some moral lessons. I learned that it's extremely dangerous to disobey one parent regarding marital choices. The effect of this could be disastrous. All in all, this book has been enjoyable and beneficial.

However, the book changed my mood in some aspects. The writer's use of slang in presenting his thoughts in some areas does not go down well with me, and it also affected my enjoyment. For clarity, the writer should have stuck to a simple and concise style of writing. Apart from this, the book is wonderful and beneficial. Also, I didn't encounter any grammatical errors, which means it was exceptionally edited. Given this, I rate Kalayla by Jeannie Nicholas 4 out of 5 stars. I didn't give it a perfect rating due to the negative aspects mentioned. I hereby recommend the book to lovers of marital and family problems.
