American Dream? by Jeoung Lee follows Hanel Kim, a Korean nurse navigating challenges as a minority in her US workplace, stemming from her struggles since youth and exacerbated during the pandemic. The novel highlights dedication, corruption, discrimination, racism, and determination. Born in Korea amidst political turmoil after the president's assassination, Hanel departs for the US, where her brother already resides.

She later works in a Saudi Arabian hospital amidst conflict but leaves due to instability, surviving a kidnapping attempt. Influenced by her brother, she settles in Alaska, joining a nonprofit hospital, where she confronts numerous hurdles, including contracting COVID-19. The book paints a narrative of resilience amid adversity.

The reason I love this book is because it skillfully addresses various aspects. While a work of fiction, it thoughtfully tackles pressing healthcare issues in the US, painting a vivid picture of the challenges hospitals faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through its narrative, it dives into medical procedures and the vulnerability of healthcare workers due to inadequate protective gear. Furthermore, the book sheds light on the pervasive problems of racism and bias encountered by foreign nurses, illustrating how these factors influence task assignments and career trajectories. This insightful exploration of real-world issues within a fictional framework is what truly captivates me about this book.

I found nothing to dislike about the book, as it was intellectually enriching and enlightening. The author adeptly demystified medical terminology and revealed the realities of the American healthcare system, particularly within the context of the COVID era. I recommend this book to individuals who are interested in medical stories, societal exposés, and narratives that shed light on the inner workings of the American healthcare system, especially during the COVID era.

I gave this book a perfect 5 out of 5 stars due to its educational value, concise presentation, avoidance of superfluous information, and powerful societal message. Additionally, the book's exceptional editing and complete lack of errors contributed to my high rating.
