Project Tau by Jude Austen, is a harrowing tale of conditioning and betrayal set in the fictional future. Human cloning is now possible and these 'projects' are treated much like how I imagine slaves would be. After accepting a dare in order to be allowed to join a fraternity, our protagonist, seventeen-year-old Kaylin Taylor finds himself in a protected facility and is coerced into signing over his rights to avoid being punished. He is mislabeled as a project and the scientists and trainers in the facility are instructed to treat him as such. His companion, Project Tau is assigned to be his roommate and they both embark on the journey that each project takes that prepares them for their inevitable sale to an owner. What follows a horrific tale of torture and subterfuge that will leave the reader at the edge of their seat.

I enjoyed this first novel very much, the characters were all very well-developed and unique. The setting of the story is a very thought-out future that is explained in such a way as to be completely plausible and at the same time fantastical. I enjoyed how the main characters were so different but loyal to each other. The violence throughout the story was exciting and built into a magnificent climax.

There wasn't much that I did not like about the story, I thought the obviousness of some of the secondary characters to be a bit unbelievable. The story moved along at a good pace but then the ending was rushed. The ending was very intriguing and left me wanting to get the second book in the series immediately. I very much enjoyed reading Project Tau and look forward to the rest of the Five Worlds series

The novel contains a high volume of profanity. I found no errors beyond the artistic usage by the author. The novel was professionally edited. I rate Project Tau by Jude Austin 5 out of 5.
