In his book “Niching Up”, Chris Dreyer communicates the benefits of niching your business. Through many examples ranging from harry potter and star wars to his own personal experience, Dreyer breaks down the pros and cons of focusing in on one specific market, also known as niching. Although the title of the book seems to imply the latter, this book walks through “why” niching is beneficial but does not explain “how” to go about doing so. For this reason, I give this book a 3 out of 5 rating.

Dreyer spends the first chapter of the book walking through the cons and the subsequent 7 chapters detailing each pro. Though there are insightful points made in regard to why one would niche, it felt very verbose. The main point of each chapter is made within the first few pages, followed by many examples reinforcing that point. Due to the fact that most of the main points were straightforward and made sense off the bat, I found myself dragging my feet through the rest of the chapter after the first few pages. What would have brought this book up to a 5 for me would have been a chapter or 2 spent on the pros of niching and the rest of the book spent detailing actionable steps that one can take to find a niche in a particular market.

Aside from the content, the book was very well-written and engaging. It contained a range of examples, including a plethora of mainstream media references, to which most readers can probably relate. Throughout the process of reading the book, it was evident that the author was very well versed and knowledgable on the topic at hand: niching. Overall, this book is an easy read with a very basic walk through the benefits of niching; a good start for readers that are unfamiliar with the concept.
