A terrible event has challenged the people of Earth. A large cloud of dust has covered the Earth, blocking out the sun's heat. Temperatures drop to below 0 degrees. Five survivors flee to a shelter in hopes of surviving this devastation. The dust cloud is estimated to last around ten years. As things begin to go wrong with the shelter, the inhabitants wonder whether they will make it till the dust cloud clears. Inside the shelter, outside rules don’t apply. They will have to do whatever they can to survive.
I liked that the characters were very three-dimensional and grew throughout the book. You could see the effect of isolation on all of the characters and how they adapted to it. I also liked how the author used diary entries to show character development and to keep the story going. I also enjoyed looking at how humans react and grow under circumstances of distress. I also thought it was interesting how the author changed his writing in separate entries.
Even though the journal entries were interesting because of how they were written, I felt that the author went a little overboard when writing Jessica’s journal entries. The journal entries didn’t have any apostrophes, which I felt was not very realistic for two reasons. One, commas were included, and if she wouldn’t use apostrophes, then why would she use commas? And two, she is at least seventeen at the time the first entry was written and so she would know better. I also didn’t like that the sexual content was added, even though nothing was shown.
I would rate Unlight, by Chandra Shekhar, 3 out of 5 stars. It was a well-written and interesting story despite the inaccuracies of Jessica’s entries. Other than the entries, there were no grammatical errors.
I would recommend this to science fiction readers ages 14 and above. There wasn’t a lot that was objectionable, and it was a fun story.
