Thriving in the Storm by Bill Murphy successfully demonstrates the possibility to overcome trauma and live a full and rewarding life. The author provides exercises throughout the text that the reader may use to become a better version of themselves, while sharing impactful personal anecdotes.

I rated this book three out of five stars. The genre is listed as self-help, and while the author does a good job supplying advice in this regard, the book comes off as more of an autobiography. The author opens with the trauma he experienced as a child and the steps he took to navigate through the emotional toll that took on his person. As you progress through the book, it seems to be primarily centered around his accomplishments. While these are beneficial to demonstrate the effectiveness of his advice, I feel too much time is dedicated to this area.

The exercises listed in the book are easy to locate and, in my opinion, beneficial. He does repeat tips in different sections of the book, though that is possibly to indicate its level of importance. I would say given the length of the book and its purpose, some of the redundant portions would be better left out.

The author shares a few other books he found helpful during his healing. He also gives direction in areas possibly not well know, such as finding a life coach and what to look for in that search.

Overall, the book is easy to read and has a good message. The author’s journey from his difficult childhood to thriving as an adult is inspirational. I would say it’s possible to understand the point he is getting across by doing the exercises and reading the last 1-2 paragraphs of each section. Generally, I rate books based on how likely I am to recommend it to peers and whether or not I will refer to it again. For Thriving in the Storm, there are portions I would certainly share with others, but it isn’t a book I would reach for more than once.
