Review of Purpose
Purpose: Design a Community & Change Your Life by Gina Bianchini is a guidebook for discovering your purpose and expanding it to a community in order to make a difference in the world. The book is organized into three sections: Finding Your Purpose, Turn Your Purpose into Action, and Take Your Purpose Digital.
The author begins by explaining how purpose, when translated to a specific action, can bring people together to effect change.
The first chapter, “How I Found My Purpose and You Can, too”, details the background and journey the author took to discover their purpose and how they used it to establish the Mighty Community.
The next chapter describes what being part of a community means to us as humans, invoking the Hero’s Journey and Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to illustrate the importance of understanding your purpose.
Subsequent chapters explain how to structure your Current Story and use it to create your Future Story, which is the manifestation of your purpose, your New North Star. With your Future Story in hand, you can create your community.
To do so, you go from Hero to Host. The great thing about this book is that the author walks you through each step to achieve this, beginning by addressing common objections.
Then you are given the skills you need and advice on how to develop them.
Finally, there are instructions on how to go about building a community, from defining your goals to finding your people.
The author does not stop there but provides suggestions for engaging and growing your community through Magic, defined as using Purpose plus Connection plus Surprise. This Magic is what sets your community of social networking apart from what’s now known as social media.
The comprehensive steps provided in Purpose elevate this book beyond theory. It offers an actionable blueprint to implement ideas with like-minded people in order to change the world.
The only thing I would suggest would be to move parts of the first chapter, where the author gives their background and introduces the Mighty Community, to later in the book where the reader’s natural question would be “How can I accomplish this?”. Beginning the book with the chapter “Purpose in Modern Life” would set the stage for the importance of community in today’s world.
This book inspired me to act, and I appreciated having the steps to do so. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in effecting change, as it is well-written and comprehensive, which is why I have rated it 5 out of 5 stars.
The author quotes Margaret Meade when she said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed individuals can change the world. In fact, it’s the only thing that ever has.” If you want to make a difference, this book could be invaluable.
