Review of Anti-Black Prejudice In America
In recent years, hate crimes against Asian Americans or immigrants have increased dramatically, letting people understand that racism is still a serious problem in American society. In the book Anti-Black Prejudice In America by Anders Eklof, the author thoroughly examines how tribalism, religion, and sexuality caused prejudice towards minority groups, how prejudice brought a lot of suffering to them, and how people fought hard against prejudice.
In the book, the author explains to us what tribalism is and why this belief exists in human society. Influenced by tribalism, religion, and sexuality, American society has discriminated against, harassed, and attacked African Americans and/or other minority groups since the colonial period. After the industrial revolution, many Americans wanted to abolish slavery, but southern states refused to do so, leading to the Civil War. The federal government won the war, but black people didn’t receive equal rights. Since then, black people have started to protect their rights through protests, laws, or violence.
I would rate this book five out of five stars. I like that the author provides a lot of information for readers to understand how racism has ruined minority groups and damaged American society. Many blacks were attacked and killed by white extremists simply because they talked to white women. The book also describes how people watched lynchings in nineteenth-century America. These people took photos and even bought portions of dead bodies on the scene. We can see how brutal and savage people can be because of their prejudice. From this book, we learn many historical facts that are different from the school's, such as President Lincoln’s thoughts about slavery. His top priority was the integrity of the United States, not the freedom of black people. Also, One of the reasons leading to the Civil War was that plantation owners didn’t want to lose their slaves, who were valuable property to them, but factory owners needed more manpower for production, and black men could make money for them. Minority groups have to protect their rights themselves. The most impressive point is that many brave white people risked their lives to support the civil rights movement in the past; they did not keep silent and enjoyed their privilege. More and more Americans believe in equal rights today; no one can stop this trend anymore. I don’t see anything negative about this book. And this book is edited carefully; I don’t find any typos. I would recommend this book to people who want to understand more about prejudice toward black people, the reasons that cause racism in American Society, or how minority groups struggle hard to protect their rights.
