Review of Shitolian
[Following is a volunteer review of "Shitolian" by O Persaud.]
"Shitolian" by O. Persaud is a compelling book with themes of identity, color, and the essence of music. With introspective storytelling and vibrant imagery, the author hghlights the historical struggles faced by individuals of different races and the profound impact of these injustices on both individuals and society. Through its unique perspective, the book invites readers to contemplate the complexities of race and the human experience.
One notable aspect I love so much about "Shitolian" is the author's remarkable ability to vividly portray the challenges individuals face while navigating their racial identities. The book masterfully explores the significance of color, from the symbolic meaning behind the black and white drinking fountains that embody separation, to the evolving perceptions of race throughout history. In doing so, the author skillfully captures the emotional weight carried by individuals as they confront societal expectations and prejudices. Another aspect I found captivating is the exploration of music as a soulful expression. The author beautifully weaves together narratives of singing the blues amidst cotton fields and the deep reverence paid to a musical heritage that refuses to be forgotten.
