Gnome Homes In A Jar, coloring book, is a lovely and detailed coloring book that is filled to the brim with fantasy cottages and castles, all enclosed in an assortment of jars and snow globes, each one with a new landscape and layout. The whimsical homes are reminiscent of the Brothers Grimm, or Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairytales, with an almost Beatrix Potter-esq feel, while still keeping a unique style all their own.

There is a great variety of illustrations to choose from, as the various homes come in many different styles, so I did not feel as if I was flipping through a monotonous book of images that only slightly differed from each other. Every Illustration looks unique and purposely thought out. Some of the pictures are neatly contained within a stylized globe with lots of details, while others spilled out of the jar and on to the page in a decorative landscape just waiting for a touch of color.

The book includes a good mix of pictures with bold lines that follow traditional coloring books, and softer, grayscale lines that would allow the artist to color with a freer hand and blend the colors more evenly, and finally a third type of image that combines bold lines and grayscale. I found the mix of the different line types to be my preferred illustrations to color, as the darker lines made a nice contrast and added a highlight to the finished image, and the lighter tones became invisible after coloring, making a nice picture over all.

Some of the more grayscale illustrations have very faint line work and it can be hard to make out the details, especially on the more intricate pictures. There are also some images that are slightly pixelated or blurred looking- most likely a printing error- which can be off putting when choosing an image to color, but there are thankfully not many of these.

Each picture is accompanied by a motivational quote that does not really have anything to do with the image, and I found a little out of place, but at least this way there is something on the back of each page.

Although the art book says it is for experienced and novice colorist, some of the more heavily detailed illustrations could look slightly intimidating to someone new to adult coloring books, but there are plenty of simpler pictures to begin with and work your way up.

It is evident that the author/ Illustrator put a great amount of time and love into this collection of Gnome Homes In A Jar, and it is a easy book to get lost in for a few hours and enjoy the simple pleasure of coloring. I would say the book has earned a favorable 4 stars out of 5 from me.
