In the book Man Mission by Eytan Uliel, four friends establish an annual tradition they dub the “Man Mission,” a week-long adventure trip that takes them around the world. They participate in a myriad of activities such as hiking, biking, kayaking, and sometimes find themselves in unique situations such as interacting with drug dealers in New Zealand and encountering a lion in South Africa. As the years pass, they each settle into the roles of husbands, fathers, and career men.

However, when reality challenges their ideal lives, the Man Mission becomes a sanctuary for stability and redemption. This novel is a blend of travel narrative and real-life events overlaid with a façade of fiction, detailing the journey of these ordinary men as they seek adventure, meaning, and purpose, amid evolving notions of masculinity.

In his book, Uliel shares deep and personal stories from 15 years of annual trips he took with his three friends. They had loads of adventures and also faced some tough times, just like Uliel does in his own life. By being real and open about his experiences, Uliel is able to connect on a personal level with anyone who chooses to read his book and join him on this journey.

However, the story was hard to follow because it kept jumping back and forth in time without any warning. One moment, you’re reading about one scene, and the next, you’re suddenly thrust into a completely different time period. This made it pretty tricky to keep track of what was happening when. It felt like I was trying to piece together a puzzle without all the pieces. It was a bit off-putting, honestly. I think the story would have been easier to follow and more enjoyable if it had stuck more to a straight timeline, or at least made the switches between times smoother and clearer.

Based on the reasons above, I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. Man Mission is a book that really makes you think about life, especially the way we live it nowadays. It’s a fun and easy read, but it also tackles some deep and meaningful questions. It’s a great mix of light-hearted and serious. It is also professionally edited, and I did not find any typographical, grammatical, or spelling errors. However, the narrative was difficult to follow due to abrupt time jumps, making it hard to understand the sequence of events.

That being said, I recommend Man Mission to anyone interested in personal narratives and adventure stories. Readers will appreciate the themes of friendships, life transitions, personal growth, and changing concepts of masculinity. It might also attract individuals who enjoy explorations of life’s deeper questions and challenges, even if the narrative structure can be somewhat complex to follow due to its non-linear timeline.
