Review of Zona: The Forbidden Land
Fred G. Baker's novel, Zona: The Forbidden Land, can be aptly described as a work of genius. The story revolves around Dr. Grant Taylor, who arrives in Saint Petersburg, Russia, to take over his late uncle Randall's estate. He was a daring explorer known as Uncle Randall, constantly embarking on scientific expeditions to uncover new possibilities and discoveries. Grant's journey begins as he collaborates with Boris, his uncle's lawyer, and Irina, his niece, to gather the necessary support and assume control of Randall's estate.
However, it is revealed that Grant's uncle had ventured into an enigmatic place called Zona, where he never returned and was presumed dead. As Grant settles into his new responsibilities, he stumbles upon certain artifacts and writings that challenge his belief in his uncle's demise. It becomes evident that Uncle Randall had left behind clues, suspecting something amiss about his ill-fated expedition. Consequently, Grant, aided by a group of individuals, embarks on a mission to rescue his uncle from Zona and uncover the secrets of this mysterious realm. The fate of Randall now hangs in the balance, dependent on their endeavors.
Reading Zona: The Forbidden Land by Fred G. Baker was a delightful experience. The characters were captivating and well-crafted, with Grant being my personal favorite. His bravery and selflessness shone through as he doubted the intentions of his uncle's acquaintances regarding the mission at hand. Despite having professional obligations to return to, Grant willingly ventured into the unknown in search of his uncle. The team preparing for the Zona expedition made earnest efforts to be organized and ready, yet they encountered unexpected dangers. Despite their losses, the impact of this extraordinary location on their lives compelled me to be astonished by their choices later in the narrative.
While some readers might find the depiction of drinking and sexual encounters unsettling, I had no qualms about these elements as the author indicated their inclusion in the description. I willingly chose to read the book, aware of its content. Notably, the novel was exceptionally well edited without errors, emphasizing its high quality. Throughout the story, I felt transported to Zona alongside the scientists, sharing their fascination as they studied the flora and fauna of the land. At times, I even experienced trepidation due to the adverse weather conditions and encounters with wild creatures. Zona: The Forbidden Land concludes with readers yearning to witness the other enchanting imaginings Fred G. Baker can conjure through his words and eagerly anticipating a sequel. I wholeheartedly award Zona: The Forbidden Land a perfect five out of five stars rating.
Given the explicit sexual content and profanity, I do not recommend this book to younger readers. However, science fiction and adventure novel fans will find it enthralling and worth their time.
