Joe D'Angelo is a cop well known among his fellow officers for his bravery and successful activities as a law enforcement agent. In an attempt to stop a bank robbery, he murders the brother of a famed drug lord. As investigations proceed, he is suspended from his duties as a cop and later opts to retire, move from New York to Texas, and start a new life outside of law enforcement.

In Canyon, Texas, Joe opens a gunsmith store and works as a cowboy in a bid to help his friend Kyle, who owns a ranch. The change of environment is great as he settles down, makes a couple of friends, and eventually meets Megan, with whom he falls in love. However, misfortunes from his past follow him to Texas. Pablo Jimenez, the drug lord whose brother he murdered, comes back in an attempt to claim his life for obstructing his business and to avenge his brother.

The Unlikely Cowboy by James E. Doucette is an engaging read that paints a realistic story of the lives of a police officer in New York and a cowboy in Texas. The title of the book comes from the main character's adventures and experiences as a cowboy. The book is embedded with a solid plot, and the main character's fearlessness and bravery, which make many others look up to him, are key inspirations I got from the book.

Although the plot and story the author came up with are solid, I felt like the course of the story was not ideal. It lacked the tension and suspense that can keep an ideal reader intrigued, interested, and expectant. After Joe killed Pablo's brother in New York, it is normal to expect that revenge may be around the corner. But most of the story after that was a somewhat monotonous narrative of Joe's life in Texas that did not keep me as intrigued as I was at the beginning of the book.

All in all, I give the book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. I noticed no errors, so I can confidently say the book was exceptionally edited.

I recommend the book to all readers who are intrigued and interested in realistic fiction, particularly to readers who are unfazed by violence.
