The book, Terms of Service: Subject to change to Change Without Notice by Craig W Stanfill begins with Kim, a young person living in an AI-run dystopian society where being ‘special’, or deviating from what is considered ‘normal’ is severely frowned upon and in most cases, penalized. After working hard to remain a good citizen, Kim finds herself becoming an important asset to the company for which she works after creating something so powerful and nearly impossible to replicate beginning a chain of events leading to her discovering the many hidden truths about herself and perils that lurk at every corner.

This book was very well written. I only wished I was able to read this one first before I read The Prophecy of the Heron which I do recommend doing as it is a sequel to Terms of Service: Subject to change to Change Without Notice. The prelude chapter at the very beginning of the book proved extremely helpful in providing a bit of context and explanation of society’s current state. An example of this is the description of gender or lack of as every person is assigned she/her pronouns regardless of the sex assigned at birth. In addition to the wonderful plot and storyline, there were no errors present leaving me to honestly state that the Terms of Service: Subject to change to Change Without Notice is an exciting read with many curveballs being thrown by Kim’s friends, the director, and even the AI and it was enjoyable to see how Kim was able to break free from the molds she was forced into and blossom into her clever, rebellious self.

Although this is a great story, some areas could have used a bit more detail or explanation, for example, the awakening of an AI. It became a bit confusing trying to understand the logic and processes behind determining how AI and its creators distinguish themselves from each other. In addition to this, the description of Shan and Kim’s adventure on the bikes could have used a bit more detail due to how quickly things were progressing. I found myself scrolling back up multiple times during this part of the book for fear of missing out on any important parts.

Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. My reason for this is that the author had done an exceptional job in including enough detail throughout the plot, so much so, that as the story began to build, peak, and fall, I remained right there along with the character on her journey, however, a few key points were left out or not explained enough, so there were instances in which I was left slightly confused but not in any capacity that would completely hinder my understanding of the story.

In the end, I enjoyed every moment of the Terms of Service: Subject to change to Change Without Notice and I would gladly recommend it to anyone with a taste for dystopian type reads with a mix of science fiction and romance.
