Precision is a thoroughly detailed and engaging account of a homicide case that came to life five years after the police had decidedly consigned it to the “case unresolved, case closed” section. John Riley Logan, a philanthropist, devout family man, and owner of a successful landscaping business is found dead on his late parent’s estate along with his wife Mara Ogilvie, on their first night of reunion after a period of separation.

The mystery surrounding the couple’s death begins to unfold as the adopted daughter of the late Mr. Riley, who coincidentally went missing soon after discovering her parent's murder, start to communicate with his brother J.R., using secret codes to evade her captors. New leads for inquiry emerge as she gives him valuable information about the murder, shedding light on the circumstances around the death of their parents.

A retired detective, seeking a less demanding occupation to supplement his income as he struggles to manage support for his nine children from several failed marriages, takes up a job with the Texas Department of criminal justice. Through his previous acquaintance with the now-deceased woman, Magruder begins to build his story of what actually transpired on that fateful night.

While the story is slow in building up, it has the peculiarity of being insightful as the author takes the reader on an awe-inspiring tour into the personal and intimate affairs of the characters, their less agreeable attributes, and their compromising backgrounds. This read is made up of several chapters, each focusing on a different account of characters constituting vital blocks in the understanding and towards the ultimate unveiling of the mystery. This style of writing, while it significantly increased the length of the story, also did much to improve the ease of following an otherwise complex plot with many characters.

I found the story highly emotive, especially the accounts of the suffering children in the cancer treatment program, the feeling of loss and hurt as John connected with some of them for a while before they die and John loved the kids, as well as the misery of the lives of children born to drug addicts or those abandoned soon after birth, those of abusive or of some poor parents without means to support them. The unfortunate circumstances of children growing up in foster care.

However, I also found these episodes inspiring, for instance, the impressive demonstration of compassion by people from all walks of life who upon coming in contact with the children began organizing help for these unfortunate children. Also, the outstanding display of strong will to survive through painful and compromising circumstances, and to sum it up, this is a beautiful story of hope. The story also features captivating accounts of romance and affection which, albeit not exclusively happy and all-inspiring, had essential morals and some perspective on the subject of family.

I enjoyed most, the focus on detail especially in the medical area which was so involving, lending clarity to the circumstances of characters in the story and indicative of the author’s thorough research and adequate experience in the field. However, I also felt that the story at some point dragged as the author indulged too much or rather unnecessarily on the subject of sport, and due to the unique jargon employed in these accounts I found it increasingly difficult to follow the story. The author’s enthusiasm for football and baseball did not improve the story. Because of the aforementioned shortcomings, I will give Precision by D.C Scott, a 3 out of 5 rating. This read has between mild to moderate sexual content and is therefore suitable for young adults and adults with a love for crime and mystery stories.
