Author Joe Basara can beautifully depict a Floridian landscape. As a non-native Floridian, but as someone wo has always wanted to travel there myself, he really sets out the landscape well with his imagery. Owen Cloud or also known has red for his red curly, or rather kinky (his preferred choice of words) hair, is a Hospital Corpsman was living for the hope of finding love. Basara takes us into Owen’s true emotions where he shy’s into himself at every possible turn of rejection from his love interests. He must decide between navigating the throws of lust and pining over women just to have someone or choose an ultimate leap of faith - love. The worst thing for him would be to show his true colours too soon, hiding his feeling in fear of rejection.

Spelling issues aside and a thin plot, with thin character development to match, you must possess a love of dad jokes and cliché’s, as this novel has plenty! Perhaps those older in age might understand more of them than I did, but it made the writing stale and a bit tiresome. However, with some refinement I think it could be a welcome reprise and attempt at humour. This novel for me loses points at the character names, having a difficult time to follow the background characters, as well as being able to relate them at the same time was the largest struggle that took away from the story line. The story line at times, were jumpy and inessential to advancing the story.

Reading the author’s bio, will give you the most insight to his perspective of writing this book. It feels as if it were written with a nostalgic lens of a once young man recounting his former years, or like an grandfather recounting a long story to his grandchildren. My advice to readers is to be open minded when reading this book and it should come with a forewarning of ‘must have a love of clichés’. Ultimate rating is a 2/5 stars.
