It takes a miracle for someone to change and see the light. People do terrible things and commit a lot of iniquities without plans of repentance. McDowell, written by William H. Coles, revolves around such a person until he sees the light.

Hiram McDowell is a fulfilled mountain hiker and surgeon. He has been married three times, thus having a large extended family. Hiram is mean to his wife and doesn't care about anyone but himself and his goals. He wants to be president of the International College of Surgeons and would do almost anything to get it, including making false promises.

I loved the main aim of this book, which was to teach a moral lesson. The author was able to write a book that constantly changed the emotions of his readers; sometimes, I felt hate for Hiram, and other times I felt love or pity. I also enjoyed the way the author wrote about Hiram's family; he gave them all the spotlight while still being able to link them to Hiram.

The only thing I found unpleasant in this book was its pace, which was not consistent. From the first part of this book, I noticed the author was trying to tell a story, and he took his time to do so, but as I approached part 2, the book was no longer about telling Hiram's story but about finishing the book. The second part of the book lacked content and was mainly about giving Hiram's story an ending.

I am rating this book 4 out of 5 stars; it will not be getting my perfect rating because of the problem I had with it. I found no errors in this book, which indicates that it was perfectly edited. The best way to treat people is with kindness. Hiram had to learn this the hard way. I recommend this book to readers interested in politics and moral lessons.
