Review of The Date Farm
The Date Farm, written by Jack Winnick, is about two FBI special agents named Lara and Uri who work undercover to retrieve stolen materials from a dangerous terrorist group. After deadly attacks in California and New York, the jihadist terrorist group successfully fools the United States and steals a large amount of precious metal used for warcraft. Lara and Uri get separated during the attack in New York but use their training to escape their captors. Once reunited, the couple is tasked with an undercover mission to infiltrate the date farm that is being used to disguise the terrorists’ communications center. Despite a dangerous turn of events, the pair of agents work together to discover secrets about the date farm that are crucial to their mission.
I really enjoyed the high-energy start to this story. The alarm of the terrorist attacks got my attention right away. The plot was fast-paced with a lot of action that made the story entertaining. I especially enjoyed reading the narrative from the perspectives of both sides of the conflict. Reading sections of the plot through the insight of the villain, Zainal Abadin, kept me engaged and wondering what twist would occur next. The details of the attack in New York gave way to an entertaining level of suspense. Lara and Uri also made exciting discoveries during their undercover mission. I especially enjoyed the interesting deceit and plot twists between the terrorist characters.
Although I appreciated the energy and excitement of the story, the grandeur of the terrorists’ scheme was a little difficult to believe. The disbelief of the attacks was expressed among multiple American characters. The skillset of both Lara and Uri also seemed to lack some credibility. They were able to easily escape multiple dangerous situations relatively unharmed. Considering the severity of the attacks involving extreme terrorism, the agents’ rise to heroism was a little too easy to be realistic.
I enjoyed reading The Date Farm because of the intricate storyline and action-packed plot. The writing style from multiple points of view created an exciting and suspenseful story. However, several aspects of the plot were unrealistic and lacked credibility. For these reasons, I gave The Date Farm 3 out of 4 stars and 4 out of 5 stars.
I think this story would appeal to both male and female adult readers of all ages. The Date Farm is the fourth book of the Lara and Uri series. Although I was able to easily understand the storyline, there were a lot of named characters with minimal involvement in the plot. The additional names throughout the story made it difficult to keep track of the characters. I would recommend reading this book in order with the rest of the series. The Date Farm would particularly appeal to anyone with an interest in international criminal justice.
