Review of Crazy Time
Crazy Time: A Bizarre Battle with Darkness and the Divine by L. Andrew Cooper is a mind-blowing horror that gave me chills. Lily Henshaw and her three friends, Kris, Mia, and Eric, have just had the time of their lives celebrating Eric's birthday. They are all drunk and Kris is driving. A truck appears behind their BMW and is blinding them with its lights. At first, it seems like the truck is just being driven by an ignorant and inconsiderate person until it is clear the truck is after them. It sideswippes them off the road. Lily ends up losing all her friends and she has to live with the memory of their murder.
After surviving this horrific night, Lily's life has to go on but the trauma is just too much. One small thing or the other can easily trigger her into a panic attack. She now goes through one trauma after the other, including losing her brother to suicide. She questions the very existence of God and her own sanity. Her boss, Burt, gets an order for weird posters with bizarre messages. Does this order have anything to do with what happened the other night? Will Lily be able to live through the hallucinations she is getting? Do they have anything to do with what happened to her and her deceased friends?
I have never read a thriller that sent shivers down my spine as much as this book did. Cooper is so great at descriptions and developing plots. This made every emotion in the book feel so real. The thrill, the terror, the trauma, I could feel it all while I was reading. It made me somehow connect with the book. I loved how it was hard for me to tell whether what was happening to Lily was real or it was just her hallucinating. The suspense it left me in kept me hooked to the book. I could not afford to put it down before finishing.
Lily is having a hard time keeping her faith in God after the terror of watching her friends die. I believe a conflict of faith is a relatable thing to some Christians. As silly as it may sound, I have been struggling to understand how God works and Lily's situation helped me deal with some things. However, I loved how the author did not make Christianity the central religion of this book. He mentions it in a clear conflict between supporting and forsaking the religion.
I loved Andrew Cooper's writing style. His ability to develop a captivating storyline was unquestionable. This book was exceptionally edited as I did not find any error. There was only one thing that I did not like about Crazy Time. The author used very long sentences at times, too long that I often got lost in one sentence I had to re-read it to understand. However, this did not influence my overall judgment of this amazing thriller. I still felt it deserves 5 out of 5 stars.
I recommend this book to readers who like horror and thrillers. The book fits the genres in every way possible. I also recommend it readers of all religious beliefs. Although there is mention of Christianity, the book is not religion-centered and most certainly does not look down on other religions. Because of the graphic descriptions of violence, the book is suitable to a mature audience. Sensitive readers should also take note of the graphic violence.
