From the feuding islands of the Lands of the Princes, a young man by the name of Galen Bray was brought to a neighboring kingdom by the dying wish of his grandfather whom he never knew. Saved by his grandfather’s executor, Rowan, he agrees to take over his grandfather’s forge and learn the trade. Galen was lucky to have a new life free from struggle as a new citizen of the kingdom of Voulhire, but he has much to learn in the civilized world and its golden age.

What Galen does not understand is that this glistening empire hides secrets. Voulhire’s King Wilhelm shrouds his past victories against the evil mage Lord Meldorath and the history of the town he tormented. He is working toward healing the land and people scared from the past war, however, Wilhelm is unaware of the conspiring tribe of revolutionary murderers called the Riva Rohavi who are plotting his downfall. These rebels have existed since the beginnings of Voulhire, but they have a new ally that could change their luck in battle.

Voulhire has made great efforts to retain harmony among its empire, but it seems that such a great kingdom cannot maintain order especially with the presence of mages. Will Galen succeed in his endeavors? Will King Wilhelm heal the land? What happened to lord Meldorath and who is trying to bring an end to Voulhire’s Golden Age? Find out in Matthew Tusz’s book: We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies.

This world has amazing potential. The author did a fantastic job describing this world, and it set up the plot for continuing the series very well. Conversely, this book was difficult for me to read. The book is divided into segments that describe different people’s perspectives. This is a great tool to help describe the vast landscape that this world covers, but the sections were very short and hard to get into in the beginning. For example, the instant I got hooked into the story of one person, it switched perspectives and it was hard to re-establish this interest in the story over and over again. It took roughly 50-75 pages for these perspectives to start joining together which made it a bit difficult to stay engaged with for long periods of time.

I am pleased with the world, and the way the author describes where the magic of the mages comes from. There is not an aspect of this world that seems out of place, nor a stray detail that does not fit into this narrative. This book was the first in the series, so the story is far from over. I am looking forward to reading more about this world, and learning what becomes of Galen and the kingdom.

The book was excellently written and edited with no grammatical errors. There was one formatting error I saw on page 156, but otherwise flawless. The book also did not contain profanity nor graphic violence.

I rate We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies 4 out of 5 stars for a fantastic world with excellent story telling, even though it had a bit of a bumpy start.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy novels with themes of magic and sorcery in medieval-like settings. The language of this novel is a bit advanced for younger audiences, so I recommend it for young adults and older audiences.
