Review of The Curious Spell of Madam Genova
I had fun reading The Curious Spell of Madam Genova by the award-winning author J. G. Schwartz. The author tells a story of two watches that have a special spell put on them. It includes 20th century history. History that is explained in a different and magical way.
Madam Genova is a fortune teller. Her friend, Monique LeClaire, is also a fortune teller but she can also cast spells. A long time ago Monique taught Madam Genova a good luck spell. One of Madam Genova’s clients brings two watches to her. They were specially by the client’s husband for their son’s birthday. They are Boy Scout watches; one is brass and one is silver. The client would like to have a good luck spell put on both. Madam Genova is not used to casting spells but her client is insistent and so she does. The spell does not quite go as planned.
I enjoyed how, as the watches went from fictional characters to historical people, their luck changed. Interwoven with historical fact are fictional reasons that certain things happened. The author has researched these historical events and is able to give great detail. Plus, the dialogue seems so true that you can hear the people speaking, especially if you have actually heard them speak.
There was some fierce swearing in one section that was a little jarring. It fit with the character, so I did not mind it. But it would definitely be off putting for some people. There are spells, both good and bad, and people who tell fortunes and read horoscopes. That might be too much for some religious readers.
I found no errors in the text. It was very well edited. I would rate it 4 out of 5 stars because of the swearing. I was constantly amazed at how the author wove real history into fiction.
I would recommend this book to older people who have lived through these incidences. It is so enjoyable to know what’s coming and how the watches “made” these things happen. Younger people if they are aware of 20th century history. Even I, as old as I am, was not around in the 1920’s, but still was aware of happenings at that time.
I have never been to a fortune teller, and I do not plan on going. I do not follow astrology. I do not believe there are people who can cast spells. I still found this book very charming and entertaining. I was able to suspend disbelief and enjoy the story. I encourage others to do the same.
