Review of Thriving in the Storm
Hope, faith, focus, and empowerment are what I gathered from reading Thriving in the storm: nine principles to help you overcome any adversity. This book takes you on a journey through his eyes of how he came from a miserable upbringing and the challenges he faced while improving himself and his mindset, which helped guide him to where he is today. We all will endure a storm, and this book will help you understand how you should not let the storm deter you or stop you from whatever it is you want to do in life but, in turn, take what that storm has brung to you and make it into a positive learning experience and flourish.
Bill Murphy has created a step-by-step process for those that feel unmotivated, distracted, unsure, hopeless, and even unworthy with easy-to-follow exercises and activities that can be implemented to turn those negative feelings into feeling powerful, which can lead to success.
The best moments throughout this book came towards the end when he presented an exercise to help reiterate what he just went over in that chapter and subchapter. The activities are straightforward and short enough to help anyone implement them with little effort. The book has a great flow and keeps you interested with every page I read; I'm learning more and more as I go along. Sharing his life, the bad and the horror that he experienced, created a sense of openness that allowed me to fall deeper and deeper into the words he provided. I wanted to read more to understand and implement what he was saying because many of his words hit home for me.
At the beginning of the book, Bill consistently mentioned points regarding finding your why and your goals repeatedly, which became very repetitive. However, I do understand the significance of what he was relaying in the importance of those words. Still, as an individual who understood it before reading this book, it felt like he was using them as word fluff to elongate the book.
Overall I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. The reason for my rating is I came across a grammatical error towards the end of the book as well as in the beginning; I felt that bill was elongating sections of the first few chapters by restating things he already said multiple times to fill in space.
The valuable information included in this book would be great for young adults as well as working professionals. Both groups can learn and grow tremendously from reading about an individual who dealt with many storms; some may resonate. Others may hold on to those words so that when they encounter life in an unpleasant situation, and they will be able to navigate it appropriately to turn that negative into a positive.
