Review of WIN X
WINX: The Problem-Solving Model to Win Exponentially with Customers, Employees, & Your Bottom Line by Irma Parone is thought-provoking and one of those must-have books you can refer to repeatedly.
Parone is methodical in her approach. She educates the reader on how to use the book from the start. And yes, you will be glad she does! Businesses are often born out of the need to solve problems. But the problem-solving process does not stop there. This book is a guide to help you identify and solve problems. The author proactively answers questions you might have to help you begin this journey. I love that she includes editable, reusable forms. They help you organize your thoughts as you implement her WINX system. To begin, she suggests you take the included self-assessment. All of this, and a little humor, BEFORE the introduction.
She teaches you how to define and solve problems that score wins for your customers, employees, and employers. She gives a brief synopsis of the eight steps that are the foundation of the WINX process. Then she delves deeper, devoting a chapter to each step. She also urges the reader to apply her system in other areas, such as relationships. She is modest. She admits that the WINX process will not work miracles every time you use it, but she is confident that it will reduce the number of bad decisions and losses and create more wins instead.
I enjoyed this book for a variety of reasons. I appreciate that I can use WINX in different situations and learn something new each time I go through the process. I love the depth of Irma Parone’s business acumen. She skillfully guides you as she unpacks each step using examples of real-life successes and failures. The case studies Parone includes are an excellent springboard for discussion. After reading the book, I had an enjoyable conversation about the ethics of the decisions made in the Challenger and Pinto situations. Any book that facilitates thoughtful discussion is a winner!
The book is practical in its application! One of my favorite sections is where Parone encourages you to create an action plan with viable options. Then evaluate how those decisions might impact your customers, employers, and employees. She does not let you wonder how you will accomplish her recommendations; she gives specific instructions for proceeding.
I’m hard-pressed to find something I don’t like about the book. I was uncomfortable when I read that your life is a result of the decisions you make. I think sometimes a bad situation can happen through no fault of your own. Parone mentions that sometimes you can make a sound or right decision and not get the expected result. The outcome might even be worse. It was easier to put everything in perspective after pondering that thought.
I highly recommend WINX. The author is delightful and engaging. It is a book of substance with rich pearls of wisdom throughout. It is a perfect guide for anyone interested in business, anyone who owns a business, and anyone interested in self-improvement. I rate Parone’s book five out of five stars.
